Karma

Postby Black burst » 01 Aug 2009, 15:10

The forums seem pretty barren these days. I'm getting the feeling that a lot of time is going into karma jl, and believe me a lot of anticipation. Is there any news or updates on this? I'd love to see where it is at and i'm sure everyone else would love to as well. Maybe a run-down of features/styles/focus' for the software we're all waiting for? ...promise i won't request a whole bunch of stuff...

p.s
maybe a little bit of stuff. [-o<

Just a note that this is the sleepy season for forums - mid to late summer is traditionally pretty quiet. I run another larger forum, and it's as quiet as here. I know work is progressing hot & heavy on karma, but only JL can enlighten us on his progress on that... so no peeking in the oven!

Although there is no official word on Karma. there is a lot of work ongoing with parts of the core.

This is NOT a render core (directx) but a ui core that will address all of the failings the the current vjo has.

The main thing here is the work being done is very low level and complex. The main aim is stability and usability :)

There are no matketing tag lines, but something like this: "Your way is Your vjo" might give a few thoughts.

ok, now for an announcement...

There has been lots of talk about karma, sp2, etc.

SP2 will be released soon - it's been in beta long enough. but it will get a new name:Karma

this will allow us to differentiate it from gold and sp1.

any new vjo (formally called karma), will have a new name.

So SP2 is dead, Long Live Karma.

Is the current version of SP1 (1.31) going to be the final version?
Is this the most stable, or is there an earlier version that is preferred?
I want to upgrade from 1.14, or should I just wait for Karma?

Very excited to see whats in the works Jean-Luc!

So what sort of UI improvements are we talking? I personally don't have too many problems with the interface.

I haven't jumped into much MIDI myself yet, since my setup is an autonomous sort of thing currently, but that seems to be the only interface aspect I haven't tackled yet.. seemed like a midi-learn function would be nice.

Well, whatever it is, I guess we will see soon!

So what sort of UI improvements are we talking?

It's a completely new UI concept from the ground up.

Windows (xp, vista, 7) are built on a graphics subsystem called GDI. The new UI is not based on that subsystem, but built from new mmx custom graphics routines (it's the reason that things have gone very quiet of late).

The main reason for this new development is speed. The new system is running at the cpu level and not the os level and is blisteringly fast. It is developed for realtime applications.

if you want an application to look and feel like; windows, mac osx, ableton, iphone, lemur, virtual synthesisers (roland, yamaha, etc). then we can do it.

This is a quick snapshot of the gui system in operation. These are direct screenshots and give an indication of some of the things that it can do.

Wow, that is a drastically different UI! Looks nothing like vjo as we currently know, so it will be interesting for sure.

Those switches remind me of the HP-1000s I worked with in the military. I'm sure your rendition will work a lot better!

So what are your plans for releasing an alpha or beta version (maybe GUI only, sending out OSC / Midi) so we can get used to it?
Could also be done in a closed beta with the well known suspects...

Second that..
Screenshots perhaps of how the gui is user configureable, shots of presets maybe, shots of the node view (if changed) etc. Basically anything we haven't yet seen would be appreciated. I'm obviously interested in the plans for the core too.

About Node view changed.. i think this app, however it will be called, will be something build up completly from scratch. So dont expect to find all of our 300 plugs in it.
